In brief: The MAS ETH in Applied Technology

The programme offers managers from any professional background a scientific understanding of relevant applied technologies, enabling them to implement new products and solutions in their organisation.

Structure and content

Programme description

The MAS ETH in Applied Technology (MAS ETH AT) fosters curiosity and lifelong learning, emphasising technology literacy. It relies on a scientifically rigorous and interdisciplinary approach. This facilitates the understanding of the most impactful applied science and technologies (e.g. “reverse MBA”). Participants will uncover a new dimension to their careers, and a competitive professional edge based on a new system level thinking. Participants can drive proactively the adoption of new technologies within own organisations.

Objectives

The programme sets ambitious learning goals:

  • Understand the newest technologies and their impacts in the next 5-10 years
  • Make informed decisions involving complex technology topics
  • Develop system level thinking to understand complex systems
  • Become an effective communicator linking business and technical teams
  • Lead technical teams more efficiently, while fostering their creativity
  • Connect with like-minded peers from diverse industries

Professional perspectives

Graduates of the MAS ETH AT have the skills to shape their company’s strategic direction, especially when it comes to using and developing technology solutions. They are confident taking on higher-level management roles within tech-based companies. Additionally, they are well-equipped to lead industry efforts in implementing technology-based solutions for accelerated innovation, new business models, or new products. A change of career to a different industry is possible.

Structure and format

Participants complete 3 CAS programmes, followed by a course on scientific writing, and an experimental project. Finally, the participants write a Master's Thesis on a topic of their choice. The part-time programme requires a minimum of two years (with the option for extension up to 5 years).

Additional information

The participants explore how to apply technology solutions in specific business sectors. This is achieved by combining the scientific value of the CAS programmes with practical approaches:

  • an experimental part ensures participants gain hands on experience in developing a working prototype of a technology of their choice (definition of functionality, programming and assembly of components, etc)
  • a MAS Thesis under the supervision of an ETH professor. The Thesis must consider the application of a technology, based on the participant’s industry experience and fields of interest.

Workload is ca. 750 to 900 hours per year including lectures, projects, study time and performance assessments.
