In brief: The CAS ETH in Regenerative Systems: Systemic Design

Systemic design contrasts reductionism by focusing on holistic approaches, zooming out to understand system structures and connections, then zooming in on influential hubs, better addressing complex challenges.

Programme description

The emerging field of systemic design is not a discipline but a post-discipline – a hybrid combination of science, design and systems thinking-sensing, of challenge-based navigation processes. We enact complexity through reflexive processes, combining quantitative scientific methods such as life cycle assessment, qualitative methods such as interviews or design workshops, designerly methods like systems narratives, with embodied practices specific to enact the individual setting, such as the didactic systemic cycles.

Objectives

How do we navigate as designers, systems scientists, organic engineers, intervenors, weavers, nudgers, holistic planners, collaborative architects, curious practitioners – through emergent, largely unplannable and emergent challenges – in a direction of desirable resilience, toward designing for regeneration within complex systems? In this CAS we train both directly relevant scientific methods and designerly methods in the context of navigating living systems and their applied relevance to real-world challenges.

Systemic design is helpful for decision makers, creatives, planners, to equip them with timely tools and techniques for navigating through increasing complexities, for feeling safe in taking decisions supported by science, design, and practice.

Structure and format

The CAS is taught in a hybrid format: the MOOCs as preparatory basis, virtual live conversations with invited experts, methods practices, and a field trip.

Additional information

We train scientific and designerly methods for navigating living systems, focusing on real-world relevance. Researchers' self-reflexivity is crucial, using recursive processes to guide systemic design research. This involves flexible hybrid methods, from "hard" science to "soft" embodiment. After a virtual course warm-up and starting each participant's QUEST project, we engage in a one-week field trip to Mallorca. There, we explore bioregional regenerative weaving, visit farms, hike, dive with local biologists, and experience a 24-hour solo in the mountains.
