ZAZ exhibition MAS ETH GTA and MAS ETH in Housing: Verdichtung oder Verdrängung?
When new buildings replace. Exhibition at ZAZ Bellerive Zurich, 26 January to 23 April 2023.
"Verdichtung oder Verdrängung?" is a joint project of the MAS ETH in History and Theory of Architecture (MAS ETH GTA) and the MAS ETH in Housing, Department of Architecture, ETH Zürich. It builds on archival and primary research conducted by the programme instructors and students in the spring and fall of 2022.
Facing a surging demand for housing, the City of Zurich has embraced demolition and redevelopment as a key strategy to generate additional dwelling units. In many cases, this leads to the displacement of residents and destruction of built heritage and established communities.
The exhibition critically examines the rationales that underpin this practice. Four proposed projects in the city and nine historical case studies from cities in Europe, North America and Asia provide an opportunity to focus on residents’ voices and the social consequences of Ersatzneubau.
