In brief: The MAS ETH in Housing

The programme trains architects to understand housing challenges in their broader socio-economic, cultural and political context and to work in interdisciplinary and multi-cultural environments.

Structure and content

Programme description

The MAS ETH in Housing (MAS ETH HS) trains architects to understand and respond to the housing challenges within their broader socio-economic, cultural, political, and urban context. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the MAS focuses on a wide range of housing strategies pursued by communities, governmental and non-governmental agencies in different countries and contexts. It prepares architects to work in interdisciplinary and multicultural environments by putting people and their well-being at the centre.

Objectives

Understand the links between housing, culture, livelihoods and well-being; gain knowledge on local and global housing challenges and solutions through a critical study of the multiple strategies aimed at meeting the needs of different categories of people; acquire skills to become leaders in implementing housing policies and projects; gain the ability to understand housing problems through multidisciplinary lenses and to collaborate in multidisciplinary and international housing projects.

Professional perspectives

Graduates of the MAS ETH HS will be able to carry out demanding tasks in the fields of housing, human settlements and urban development projects in private architectural or consulting firms, public planning offices, as well as governmental and non-governmental international development organisations. The MAS ETH HS may also open opportunities to pursue a career in applied research and teaching.

Structure and format

Lectures, workshops, individual and group tutorials and excursions organised in the framework of four modules:

  • M1: Housing issues, challenges and strategies in Europe
  • M2: Housing issues, challenges and strategies in the Global South
  • M3: Housing research methods
  • M4: Writing and communication skills for built environment professionals

Additional information

The MAS is organised so that the students can either complete the training over a period of one year on a full-time basis or over a period of two years on a part-time basis. The 60 ECTS credits are divided in lectures, seminars, workshops, excursions, individual and groups exercises and consultations, an individual empirical research project, and a research-based MAS thesis.
