CAS ETH in Digital Health

With a clear focus on the prevention and management of non-communicable and mental diseases, the ETH CAS in Digital Health provides participants with relevant knowledge and skills in digital health research, business models and targeted applications.

Content

The goal of the course is to support individuals interested in Digital Health to better understand the need, design, implementation, and evaluation of digital health interventions for chronic and mental health conditions. The core of the program thus focuses on solutions to scale and tailor long-term treatments to the individual being treated at a sustainable cost.

The CAS ETH in Digital Health is composed of 4 modules taught over 12 months and assessed with a total of 15 ECTS. This equates to an estimated eight hours of work per week. With two on-site meetings at the beginning and end of the program, the networking aspect is emphasized and strengthened. Teaching takes place digitally with both synchronous and asynchronous teaching sessions. The first module provides insight and overview of Digital Health in general, while the second module goes deeper into Digital Health interventions and their evaluation. In the third module, participants develop their own digital biomarker. The focus here is clearly on practical work to enable a deep understanding of the health interventions to be evaluated. Programming skills are not necessary to complete this module. Building on the third module, a digital health intervention will be developed in the fourth section and presented at the final 2-day retreat. In addition to ETH professors and researchers, the retreat will bring together experts from the healthcare field to present their personal perspectives on digital health issues. The dialogue on the topic of digital health and health interventions will thus be expanded and opened beyond the CAS program.

Duration-Time Expense-Language

The CAS ETH in Digital Health lasts 2 semesters and starts in the fall and spring semesters. The first cohort starts in February 2022. The associated courses take place in digital form with synchronous and asynchronous learning units and are thus suitable as part-time continuing education. The time commitment per week is approximately 8 hours. The language of instruction is English.

Perspectives

Graduates of the CAS ETH in Digital Health will be able to understand the importance of digital health for the prevention and management of chronic and mental diseases as well as key concepts of digital health interventions. They will also be able to identify design and evaluation frameworks for digital health interventions, critically evaluate digital health business models and corresponding interventions, and discuss opportunities and challenges in digital health. From a practical perspective, graduates will gain the skills to develop and validate a digital biomarker and to design, implement, and evaluate a smartphone- and chatbot-based just-in-time adaptive intervention.
