In brief: The CAS ETH in Regenerative Materials – Structural Specialisation
The programme focuses on the structural specificities of earth, bio-based or re-used materials used as load bearing walls or structures in high efficiency buildings with positive environmental impacts.
Structure and content
Programme description
The subject of the programme is high-quality building structures made of rammed earth, straw bales and bamboo, as well as reused concrete/wood structural elements. Participants acquire results-oriented skills in the areas of structural efficiency and load bearing building elements. Graduates are in a position to assist in the structural dimensioning of long-lasting buildings or infrastructure.
Objectives
The objective is to impart results-oriented skills relevant to the structural dimensioning of long-lasting buildings or infrastructure. Programme teaching combines complementary methods based on active learning to ensure an efficient and durable impact on participants’ professional development. The long-term strategy of the programme is to further the dissemination of rigorous information on Regenerative Materials, and to strengthen the network of players in this field over a wide range.
Professional perspectives
On completion of the programme participants will be able to plan and calculate the structural behaviour of building structures made of earth and bio-based and re-used materials. The main tools available will be analysed and used through exercises based on existing case studies, visits to example buildings and analysis of technical details. Graduates may take advantage of new professional opportunities in architectural or engineering offices, control agencies or construction companies.
Structure and format
The programme takes four weeks, spread over one semester. It combines six complementary teaching methods: theoretical and experimental lectures; digital guest lectures (public); hands-on exercises; visits to inspiring projects; participative engagement; and project-based learning.
Additional information
To foster intensive interaction and high-quality learning, a limited number of professionals (around 8) are selected for this programme. Selection is based on the candidate’s field, level of expertise, and prospective future impact on the respective field. All activities promote dynamic interaction between participants, the organising team and guests. The teaching team comprises recognised experts in the field whose approaches, origins and backgrounds are complementary (designers, entrepreneurs, researchers, developers etc.).
Being less bad is simply not good enough! It is time to go beyond sustainability.

Target group and admission
Target group
The programme addresses the needs of professionals who want to deepen and question their existing practice in order to develop more regenerative approaches. Its target groups include structural engineers and building contractors, architects, project managers, NGOs and company representatives.
Requirements
Master's degree acknowledged by ETH or equivalent educational qualifications. Because some calculations require complex modelling, a basis in structural calculation is expected.
